CHAPTER NINETEEN

Life is like a wombat, it's tricky to embrace, then when you try to pin it down, it kicks you in the face.

Sammy J and Randy, Sammy J and Randy's Difficult first album

The sun sat high in the sky, casting its rays off the glittering waters of the reef.

Morgan stepped out of a portal, and onto the sand outside the Dungeon. Her breaths were heavy, her jaw clenched. Her hand wrapped tight around the Dungeon's Core. Using Lag Spike took a lot out of her.

She wiped her dagger off in the sand, blood still staining the black blade. It was so hard to keep the damn thing clean. She'd never been good at keeping things clean. She was a nightmare to live with, but Keat had never minded. No, his faults had always been in other areas.

Shame about Mongrel though, she should probably go back for him.

Morgan half-turned back towards the Dungeon.

'Where do you think you are going, Miss Canciani?' Came a rumbling voice.

Morgan's brow furrowed, and she turned to face Pyne.

Pyne sat on a beach chair, feet up on a stool. He bit into a mango, and the juice ran down his chin, dripping onto his silk shirt. Out at sea, two ships were guarding the Dickhead Slayer.

A group of his goons waited nearby. Four prisoners were shackled with the goons. Prav and Tomihiro, beat up and bruised, Noodles the sausage dog, and the fourth prisoner. Romy, Morgan's sister, gaunt-looking with eyes downcast.

'Pyne.' Morgan said, rolling the Dungeon's Core around in her hand.

Pyne stood up and sauntered over to her. 'You've done very well Morgan, I must say I had my doubts when I sent you to bring Walker here. Then the loss of the gold mine, well, you were never good at keeping your partners in check. But you delivered.

The Dungeon Core, hand it over.'

Morgan twisted her hand behind her back. Her eyes flicked to her sister, then back to Pyne.

'My sister first, set her free.'

Pyne stalked around her, the launcher strapped to his arm, clicking and rotating. 'Well now, about that. See you cost me a lot of gold at the mine. Won't be cheap to replace that production, or the workforce. My tenant score is rock bottom after employing all those labourers, costs a lot to keep Cairns safe. All of us have debts, Morgan.

I'll take this Core as payment for the mine. You bring me another Nine Pillar Dungeon, and then we'll talk.'

Morgan took in the number of goons, six, and Pyne's ships. Romy's eyes still stared down at the beach.

'We had a deal Pyne, the Dungeon for Romy. Give her to me.'

Pyne pulled a remote from his launcher, the remote for the poisoned collars. 'This, you want this? Such a small thing to have the power in your hands.'

Pyne wandered over to the prisoners and bent at the waist to stare at Romy. He put a finger to her chin and turned her face up. Romy shut her eyes. Pyne rose to standing, then kicked Noodles in the side.
